The Shawlands Church is part of the United Reformed Church (URC) which is a Christian Church in the tradition of the reformation. It is the union of four established churches:

• The Congregational Church of England and Wales
• The Presbyterian Church of England
• The Re-Formed Association of Churches of Christ
• The Congregational Union of Scotland

The first two churches united in 1972, the third joined in 1981 and the fourth in 2000.

In Great Britain the URC seeks to develop ecumenical advance through national and local ecumenical projects and is committed to take further steps toward the unity of all God’s people. The Church is called to be the sign of God’s mercy, to take seriously and act upon the word of God in scripture and to be where people are, being in and part of the community.
